...exploring how people shape the world's forests

Guatemala

The Guatemala CRC is located at the Centro de Estudios Ambientales (Center for Environmental Studies) at the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala in Guatemala City. It was officially established as a CRC in 2002, though they have collaborated with Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO) and Indiana University on IFRI projects since 1996. FLACSO was a CRC in Guatemala between 1996 and 2002. Current and planned work investigates the local effects of national policies of decentralization, the management of natural resources by indigenous communities, and incorporates remote sensing and GIS analysis with IFRI data. To support the possibility of carbon trading as a mitigation to climate change, we also complete a carbon inventory in all forests measured.
