James Erbaugh
James joined IFRI in August 2013 as a doctoral student at the University of Michigan’s School of Natural Resources and Environment. He completed his undergraduate studies in Environmental Principles and Practices and Philosophy at Miami University and received a Master of Philosophy in Geography and Environment from the University of Oxford. James currently collaborates on IFRI projects that generate and analyze data on human-environmental relationships using survey dissemination and analysis.
Through his research, James is interested in understanding how policy is translated into regulation, and how regulation affects forest cover and rural livelihood strategies. He combines survey, GIS, and qualitative methodologies to analyze forest landscapes in Southeast Asia. Through these methods, he strives to contribute policy relevant research on how people and forests define and impact one another, and with what outcomes.
